Throughout my media course, I have deepened my understanding of various theoretical frameworks within the field of media and communication studies. The exploration of representation concerning social identities, including gender, race, class, and disabilities, has been particularly enlightening. Additionally, I have engaged with contemporary media issues through theoretical lenses, allowing me to critically analyse current debates and cultural phenomena. Furthermore, I have examined the impact of digital culture and the historical significance of diverse media forms, thereby enriching my comprehension of the intricate dynamics that shape media practices today.
The journalism component of my course is predominantly practical, fostering essential skills in researching, writing, and reporting across various specialisms. I have enhanced my abilities in fashion journalism through the production of trend reports and interviews, while also acquiring digital skills pertinent to blogging and social media. My studies in arts journalism have focused on feature writing and reviews, honing my critical writing techniques across literature, film, and music. Additionally, I have engaged in magazine journalism, exploring the business aspects and production processes of magazines, as well as gaining invaluable hands-on experience in news writing, feature writing, and journalism law through active participation in our university newspaper, The River.
